Extreme Earth Art!!

This week we have finished off our topic of Extreme Earth. We have learnt a lot about natural disasters; how they are caused, the effect they have on those around them and how we can protect ourselves from them!

We have used our drawing skills, along with colours and paints to show the different natural disasters we have been learning about on one page, can you tell what each picture is supposed to be?

Tornados!

We'd just like to thank parents for sending in your child with bottles this week so that they could create there very own tornado (in a bottle!)! The children absolutely loved it! Take a look at some of the photos and don't be afraid to ask your child how they made them. They did such a fantastic job of following instructions. It did take us a couple of times to get it right but the children were ever so patient and the outcome was definitely worth the wait.

Bar Charts!

As the year gets into full swing, year 4 have been doing tremendously well! This week they have been exploring bar charts and today they have managed to think of their own question to ask fellow classmates, draw their tally chart, collect their data before displaying the information they collected in a bar chart! All in one lesson! The children had fantastic smiles throughout and there was a big buzz of excitement in our classrooms. Take a look at some of the pictures.

Famous Author came to visit!!

Yesterday we were lucky enough to have a famous author come to visit our school! David Bedford has written lots of different books and he came in and showed us some of the books he has written. We learnt how he writes different stories and then even got to listen to two of his stories!

We learnt a dance to go with one of his books as well which all of the children joined in as well as the
teachers! It was so much fun!

Money, Money, Money!

This week year 4 have been introduced to the concept of money and have had the additional challenge of dealing with British coins/ notes. Some children were calculating how much change they would receive if they bought something using real (read fake) money while others used their knowledge of money within a sweet shop problem solving context. They all did so well!

Keep coming back to see how we're getting on!

Practical Maths

This week in Maths, Year 4 have been learning how to use the column method for addition and subtraction with 4 digit numbers! We used the Dienes equipment to help us understand the place value of each digit and enable us to understand why and how we could 'carry' numbers over to the next column if we needed to.

We now understand the importance of knowing our place value for each digit! We will be looking at word problems tomorrow and applying the skills we have learnt!
